Women's Golf Shatters Records, Take 3rd at Indy
The University of Findlay women's golf team had a record-breaking round during the final day of competition at the Indianapolis Fall Invitational, which wrapped up on Sep. 13 at the Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel, Ind.
The Oilers posted school record-breaking team score of 293 on Tuesday, bettering the old mark of 297 that was set last season during the NCAA Division II National Championship. Their final round score, coupled with their 302 on Monday, enabled them to finish in a tie for third place at the event, which featured some of the best programs in all of NCAA Division II.
Findlay's 36-hole score of 595 (302, 283) was also good enough to establish a new school record. The score eclipsed the 602 shot by the Oilers last year at the NCAA Division II National Championship.
Senior Shelby Warner kicked off her final year with the Oilers by earning runner-up honors at the event with a 1-under par score of 143, the second-lowest 36-hole score in school history. She posted a 1-over par score of 73 in the opening round before carding a 2-under par score of 70 on day two, the fourth-lowest mark in program history.
Sophomores Makenzie Torres and Samantha Hatter also had a great showing at the tournament as they both tied for 14th with 36-holes scores of 150. Torres turned in a consistent performance with back-to-back 75's while Hatter posted a 78 on Monday before firing an even-par 72 on Tuesday.
Freshman Meredith Wipper had a great start to her career at Findlay and tied for 23rd at the tournament with a two-round score of 152. Wipper also played consistently at the event, posting a 76 during each round.
Freshman Mackenzie Keenoy tied for 73rd with a 169 (85, 84) while Samantha Kellstrom tied for 81st with a 177 (86, 91).
Dallas Baptist won the tournament with a two-round score of 585 (300, 285) while Indianapolis took second with a 587 (290, 297). The Oilers and Tarleton State (300, 295) then tied for third with a 595, ten strokes off the lead.
