Oilers Win Convincingly in Dayton
Kettering, OH - The University of Findlay women's golf team dominated on the second day of the Dayton Fall Invitational on Tuesday, Oct. 18. The Oilers took first place after posting a 290 on the second day of the tournament, tying the school record that they set earlier this season. Their 36-hole team score of 589 is good for second all-time at Findlay. Competing in the tournament were 13 NCAA Division I schools with Findlay competing as the only Division II school. The win is the second of the year for the Oilers who, before this fall, had not won a tournament since September 16 of 2014.
Leading the Oilers was senior Shelby Warner who fired the best round of her career, tying a school record with a round of 67 (-3) to finish the tournament with a +1, 141. Her second round score was the only sub-70 round in the tournament and was enough to earn her medalist honors. She tied 2016 graduate Kasey Petty for the lowest 18 and 36-hole scores in school history. Petty shot a 67/141 in last spring's NCAA DII East Regional. Warner's previous low was a 69 which she shot at the Perry Park Spring Fling last spring.
Right behind Warner was sophomore Makenzie Torres who fired a 75 (+5) to secure her spot in second place. Torres finished with a score of 146 (+6) for the tournament, the fourth-best 36-hold score in school history and the lowest in Torres' young career.
Freshman Meredith Wipper and sophomore Samantha Hatter each finished the tournament in the top ten after they each finished with a 152 (+12). They each improved from yesterday's round with Wipper shooting a 75, two shots better than Monday, and Hatter firing a 73, six shots better than Monday.
The final player in the lineup was freshman Samantha Kellstrom who shot an 82 on Tuesday to give her a two-round score of 159 (+19). That score placed her in a tie for 32nd.
Junior Kelsey Koesters, competing as an individual, also finished in a tie for 32nd with a 159. She wrapped up her tournament with a Tuesday score of 76 (+6), seven shots better than her Monday round.
Findlay is back on the course on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 24-25 when they travel to Nashville, Tennessee for the Trevecca Fall Invitational.
