Findlay Wins UNG Bracket Challenge

Results

Homer, Ga.- The University of Findlay women's golf team headed south this week for the University of North Georgia Bracket Challenge. The event is being held at the 6,107 yard, par 72, Chimney Oaks Golf Club. The tournament is bracket format, utilizing medal match play. The medal match play format consists of five matchups as players go head-to-head. The winner of a match is determined by total strokes and the team that wins at least three matches, declared the winner.

Today, Findlay faced North Georgia in the finals. The Oilers needed just three points to win the tournament and they did just that. They won four of the five matchups- in dominating fashion.

First off for the Oilers was senior Jill Schmitmeyer. Schmitmeyer took an early lead and never looked back. She recorded a round of 74 (+2) to beat her opponent by eleven and put the first point on the board for the Oilers.

Freshman Mary Kelly Mulcahy was next off for the Orange and Black. She shot a round of 70 (-2) to take down her opponent by an impressive sixteen strokes. In fact, M.K. Mulcahy was only leading by four while making the turn but furthered her lead by twelve on the final nine holes to put the second point on the board for Findlay.

Needing just one more win to secure the victory, junior Gabby Woods did just that. Woods took it low today, recording a 69 (-3) to win by eight.

Freshman Hayley Dye, who was playing in the medal match play format for the first time in her career, picked up a win. She carded a 76 (+4) to take a five shot victory.

Rounding out the lineup for the Oilers was Erin Mulcahy who recorded a round of 80 (+8) to her opponent by five.

Quote from Head Coach Dominic Guarnieri

Today was by far the best round we played all week. Our 4 lowest scores totaled 289 and I was really pleased with how we didn't get complacent even when we had big leads. It was nice to get the win and I feel like we are continuing to improve as we get closer to the postseason.

This is the Oilers second win of their spring season. Other notable finishes in the event included no. 22 Missouri- St. Louis in fourth and no. 12 Lee in fifth place, and no. 27 Grand Valley State in sixth.

Findlay will be back in action April 17-18 for the Cav Classic, hosted by Walsh University.
