Oilers Lead After Day One at the NCAA DII East Regional

Springfield, Ill. - The University of Findlay women's golf team is currently in first place at the NCAA Division II East Regional, which wrapped up day one today, May 8. The event is being held at the 6,137, par 72, Panther Creek Country Club. They recorded an opening round 284 (-4) and are leading by two over Indianapolis. 

Leading the Oilers are junior Gabby Woods and freshman Hayley Dye. The two shot rounds of 70 (-2) and are in a tie for second. Woods opened her round, getting to three-under through nine before playing the final nine at one-over par. Meanwhile, Dye recorded six birdies on her round with four coming consecutively on the back nine. 

Sophomore Mary Kelly Mulcahy is in a tie for sixth after recording a 71 (-1). She recorded three birdies and two bogeys on the day. Senior Jill Schmitmeyer carded a round of 73 (+1). Schmitmeyer was two-under par after thirteen holes but played her final five holes at three-over par.  

Rounding out the lineup for the Oilers was sophomore Erin Mulcahy. She shot a round of 82 (+10). 

Findlay's 284 (-4) is the second best 18-hole score in program history. The Oilers led the field in both par three and par four scoring. They averaged 2.95  on par threes and 4.20 on par fours. Indianapolis led in par five scoring but Findlay was still able to play them under par, averaging 4.85.

The Oilers will be back in action tomorrow for round two and then again Wednesday for the final round. The top six teams will then advance to the NCAA Division II National Championship which will be hosted in St. Louis, Mo. on May 16-20.
