Findlay at ONU Invite

The University of Findlay wrestling team made the short trip to Ada, Ohio on Saturday, December 5 for the Ohio Northern Invitational. The meet played host to 15 teams from the states of Ohio, Kentucky, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Indiana, and Virginia.

At 133 pounds, freshman Devin Rogers blew through the bracket and reached the championship round with a 4-0 record that included a first-round pin of Heidelberg's Brandon Conrad and major decisions in the third and fourth rounds. Rogers took the championship with a 5-0 decision over Adrian College wrestler, Joe Dombrowski. Rogers finished the tournament a perfect 5-0.

In the 157 pound bracket, junior Jordan Cowell earned a pin in his first matchup of the day, but dropped into the consolation round in his next bout. He then won four straight matches (two medical forfeits, a tech fall victory, and a major decision) to advance to the consolation championship. In that match he lost 8-6 by sudden victory. Cowell finished the day with a 5-2 record, which was good for fourth place.

At 165 pounds, freshman Alonzo Turner and junior Nic Skonieczny each competed well for the Roughnecks. Turner was able to begin his tournament 3-0 before dropping into the consolation bracket where he went up against teammate, Skonieczny. Turner lost that dual and was sent to the fifth place match, which he won by fall over LJ Henderson from Campbellsville. Skonieczny won his first match but fell by a 5-3 decision in his second match, sending him to the consolation bracket. He then won three straight matches, putting his record at 4-1 on the day entering the third place, consolation championship match where he was pitted against Heidelberg's Aaron Banko. Skonieczny won that match by a 4-1 decision, earning third place. He finished the tournament with a 5-1 record.

Sophomore Dalton Ishmael lost his first match of the day but was able to bounce back and won four straight matches before losing a tight 5-3 decision to Alma's Jamie Jakes. Ishmal entered the fifth place match with a 4-2 record. Ishmal won that match by a tightly contested 9-8 decision over Gage Finegan from Heidelberg. Ishmal finished with a 5-2 record.

Junior Bradley Metz took the mats at 165 pounds and went 3-0, including a pair of technical fall victories, to begin his day. An injury forced him out of his next match which sent him to consolation bracket, which he forfeited. He finished the day in sixth place and a 3-3 record.

Freshman Cody Ohnmeiss and freshman Doug Rojem competed at 149 pounds and, after first round wins, dropped into the consolation bracket. They each ended the day with a 3-2 record. Ohnmeiss picked up a pair of major decisions, including a 21-8 performance in his first consolation match.

The Roughnecks are back on the mats when they head to Indianapolis for the Midwest Classic. That event will run Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 19-20.
