Goebel Wins Midwest Classic

Indianapolis, IN – Four Roughnecks competed on the second day of competition at the 2015 Midwest Classic on Dec. 20.

Junior Nick Goebel proved he deserves his ranking as the nation's number one at 149 pounds as he finished the weekend with a tournament championship. On the second day, Goebel took out Coker College's Jordan Tague with a 4-2 decision and was pitted against McKendree's Mech Spraggins in the championship match. Goebel took the title with a 3-2 decision and improved his weekend record to a perfect 5-0.

Junior Joey White also wrestled well for Findlay as he was able to secure a fourth place finish in the 157 pound bracket.  On day 2, White defeated Chase Hack of the Indiana Institute of Technology and then took down Ashland's Zebulan with a 1-0 decision. In the third place match, White fell 6-4 to Lake Erie's Christian Baughman. White ends the tournament with a 5-2 record with both losses coming at the hands of Baughman.

Sophomore Ryan Skonieczny, 141 pounds, wrapped up his tournament with a fifth place finish. He defeated Sam Hanau of Pitt-Johnstown with a 7-3 decision in his first match of the day but lost in the consolation semifinal to Bryce Killian of King University by a score of 4-2. The match ended by sudden victory in the first overtime period. He then defeated Lake Erie's Ian Ross by a 2-1 decision in the fifth place match.  Ryan ends the tournament with a 5-2 record.

Junior Nic Skonieczny, 165 pounds, was also in action on the second day and split the first two matches in which he participated. He defeated Campbellsville's Sean Black by a 4-2 decision in his first matchup, but lost a tightly contested, 1-0 decision to Matthew Vandermeer of Lake Erie College. Then, in the fifth place match, Skonieczny lost toe Shorter University's Kade Kitchens by a 2-0 decision. Skonieczny ends his weekend after putting together a 5-3 record. He finished in sixth place.

The Roughnecks next event is the NWCA National Duals in Fort Wayne, Indiana on Jan. 8.
