Roughnecks Wrap Day 1 of Regional

The University of Findlay wrestling program completed day one of the NCAA Division II Super Regional on Feb. 26 in Indianapolis, Ind.

The Roughnecks were led by juniors Nick Goebel and Joey White, and red-shirt freshman Alonzo Turner. All three wrestlers advanced to the semifinals in their respective weight classes.

Goebel, the top-ranked wrestler in the nation at 149, finished the first day with a 2-0 record. He scored two major decision victories as he won 16-0 against Shorter's Stephen Corasaniti and 15-6 victory against North Carolina-Pembroke's Eric Milks. Goebel will now face Wisconsin-Parkside's Frank Yattoni in the semis for a chance to reach the championship bout.

White, wrestling in the 157-pound weight class, went 2-0 on the day as well. He started the event with a pin in 3:29 against Shorter's T.J. Duncan. He then picked up a 2-1 victory against Limestone's DeAndre Johnson. Coker's Rashad Cunningham is up next for White in the semifinals.

Turner went 2-0 at 165, beating Belmont Abbey's Joseph Coss by a score of 9-3 and Newberry's Lukas Gilmore by a 5-2 margin. Turner will now face Wisconsin-Parkside's Nick Fishback, the third-ranked wrestler in the nation at 165, in the semifinals tomorrow.

In addition, freshman Devin Rogers, sophomore Ryan Skonieczny and sophomore Dalton Ishmael are all alive for Findlay in the consolation bracket.

Rogers went 2-1 at 133 and is scheduled to wrestle Ashland's Chandler Minnard tomorrow while Skonieczny finished day one with a 1-1 record at 141 and will face Tiffin's Travis Salyer on Saturday.

Ishmael meanwhile completed the first day of competition with a 2-1 mark at 197. He will square off against North Carolina-Pembroke's Brach Walker when action picks back up again tomorrow.

Freshman Michael Stewart, junior Jared VanVleet, sophomore Randy Caris and junior Gerald Beck also competed for Findlay at the event.

Stewart finished the first day with a 0-2 record at 125, VanVleet went 0-2 at 174, Caris was 0-2 in the 184-pound weight class and Beck was 0-2 in the heavyweight division.

The tournament will conclude tomorrow. The top four placers in each weight class will earn the right to compete at the NCAA Division II National Championship, which is slated to take place on March 11-12 in Sioux Falls, S.D.
