Volleyball opens season with 3-1 win over Gannon

The women's volleyball team rebounded after dropping the first set to claim a season-opening 3-1 win over Gannon University on Friday.

Gannon came out strong in the first set, jumping out to a 13-5 lead over the Oilers. Findlay fought back to tie the game at 23 before Gannon claimed the set 25-23.

The Oilers won the next two sets 25-22 and 25-23. Findlay started the final set strong, using strong serving and solid blocking to earn an 11-6 lead. Erin Thomasson served five straight points to give Findlay an 18-13 lead.

Senior Abby LaVigne and freshman Mackenzie Vorst led Findlay with 13 kills apiece. Lavigne also chipped in 18 digs and tallied a .257 hitting percentage.

Libero Rachael Hammond served 18 points for the Oilers and chipped in 14 digs. Setters Jessica VonIns and Megan Florence had 16 and 19 assists, respectively for Findlay. VonIns also hit 6 kills and earned a .235 hitting percentage.

The Oilers resume action at the Davis & Elkins tournament on Friday evening with a 5 p.m. match against Ohio Valley University. On Saturday the team squares off against Indiana University-Pennsylvania and Texas A&M Kingsville.
