Oilers Begin 2016 Season in Florida

The University of Findlay volleyball team began the 2016 season on Thurs., Sep. 1 in Pensacola, Fla. at the highly competitive Hampton Inn Invitational hosted by the University of West Florida.  The invitational features three out of five teams ranked in the top 25 in the nation, with the other two sitting just outside the top 25 rankings. 

The Oilers started the tournament with a tough 3-0 (26-24, 26-24, 25-22) loss against #9 Central Missouri.

Sophomore Amanda Winner led the Oiler attack with 12 kills and senior Hannah Tong also reached the double digit kill plateau with 11 kills. 

It was a block party at the net for the Oilers, as they came up with 10 total blocks (one solo and 18 assists).  Junior Nickyla Garverick paced Findlay with one solo and seven assists and sophomore Hailee Olson helped the cause with five block assists, while also accumulating 33 assists in the match.

Sophomore Kara Scherger came away with 17 digs to lead the Oilers defensively.

The Oilers will be back in action on Fri., Sep. 2, as they battle two teams ranked in the top 25 in the nation.  Their first game comes against the host team of #23 West Florida at 12:30 p.m.  Later in the day, at 5:30 p.m., they have the tough task of taking on the #2 team in the nation of Wheeling Jesuit.
