Oilers Win 6 Events In Cincinnati

The University of Findlay men's and women's outdoor track and field teams completed the 2011 Oliver Nikoloff Open on Saturday, April 2 in Cincinnati, Ohio and had five individuals and a relay team claim first place finishes.

On the women's side, Raven Clay won the 100-meter hurdles with a provisional time of 13.91 while Cory Vales (6'06) and John Guagenti (48.38) won the 400 and high jump, respectively. Shane Shockey (16'10.75) was the best in the pole vault and Nathaniel Kurtz (55'09.25) took home top honors in the shot put on the men's side.

Shockey's mark was a NCAA automatic qualifying standard and also set a new school record while Kurtz's throw in the shot put reach provisional qualifying status.

Guagenti, Curtis Smithey, Simon Bernard and Greg Schaible also teamed to bring home another first place finish for the Oilers, taking the gold in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:16.82.

Lindsey Schmitmeyer (2:15.07) added a third place finish in the 800, Bethany Grimes (5'00.25) was fifth in the high jump and Brittany Thomas (5'00.25) was sixth in the same event.

Schmitmeyer also teamed with Catherine Wiemers, Alexa Stults and Deidre Latham added a sixth place finish in the 4x400-meter relay after crossing the finish line in 4:07.47.

Randi Depp (157'10) took seventh in the hammer throw, Clay (25.42) was seventh in the 200, Laura Kelly (4'10.25) was eighth in the high jump and Jessica Vorst (42'08.75) finished eighth in the shot put.

Schaible finished fourth in the 400 at 49.70 and also took fifth in the 200 with a time of 22.19 while Chris Ehrman was fourth in the pole vault with a mark of 14'11.

Tim Majoy (9:35) was fourth in the 3000-meter steeplechase, Tim Sanders (55.25) was fifth in the 400-meter hurdles, Darren Bass took fifth in the shot put at 50'01.25 and Smithey (22.24) was sixth in the 200.

Another 4x400-meter relay team of Sanders, Joe Guerra, Daniel Clum and Shawnathan Fort finished sixth at 3:22.49 while Kurtz finished sixth in the discus with a toss of 159'03.

The Oilers will be back in action again on April 8-9 at the Miami Invitational in Oxford, Ohio.
