Clay Leads Oilers At GLIAC Championship

The University of Findlay men's and women's outdoor track and field teams are both in seventh place after the second day of the 2011 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championship, which is being held in Midland, Michigan. The men's team scored 15 points while the women racked up 13 on Thursday, May 5.

Raven Clay had an outstanding day on the women's side as she qualified for the finals in three events.

Clay was the top finisher in the preliminary round of both the 200-meter dash and the 100-meter hurdles while placing second in the 100-meter dash.

Clay raced to a provisional qualifying time of 24.58 in the 200, finished with a NCAA automatic qualifying time of 13.58 in the 100-meter hurdles and crossed the finish line in 12.12 during the 100.

Erin Calvelage took third in the finals of the 3000-meter steeplechase at 11:18.74 and Randi Depp was third in the finals of the hammer throw at 174'00, a NCAA automatic qualifying mark.

Lindsey Schmitmeyer added a third place finish in the opening round of the 800-meter run after crossing the finish line in a provisional time of 2:12.40 while Catherine Wiemers qualified for the finals in the 400-meter dash after finishing sixth at 58.43.

On the men's side, Lyndon Johnson qualified for the finals in the 100 and 200-meter dashes while John Guagenti reached the finals in both the 200 and 400.

Johnson took second in the 100 at 10.67 and placed second in the 200 with a provisional time of 21.37 while Guagenti was third in the 200 (21.60) and third in the 400 (48.29).

Cory Vales finished second in the finals of the high jump with a provisional mark of 7'00.25, Cody Crockett placed fifth in the javelin at 182'04 and Nathaniel Kurtz was sixth in the same event with a mark of 168'06.

Curtis Smithey, Joe Guerra and Justin Eilerman all qualified for the finals in their respective events for the Oilers as well.

Smithey was fourth in the 400 (49.27), Guerra was fourth in the 800 (1:55.78) and Eilerman placed seventh in the 1500 (3:58.00).

The championship event will conclude tomorrow.
