Oilers Announce 2020 Hall of Fame Class

The University of Findlay announced their 2020 Athletic Hall of Fame class on Sep. 11. The Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held on Feb. 1, 2020 at Winebrenner Theological Seminary.

The 2020 class will include former men's soccer All-American Luis Cortell ('04, M '06), standout men's golfer Eric Atsma ('08), national champion wrestler Andy Uhl ('07), and women's soccer star Chelsea Combs ('98).

Doors for the event will open at 10:15 a.m. and the induction/luncheon will begin at 11:00 a.m. The registration fee is $25 for adults, $15 for minors (7-17) and free for children ages 6 and younger. The inductees will also be recognized during the Oilers men's basketball game against Walsh University on Feb. 1 as well. The contest is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. in Niekamp Arena.

Luis Cortell

Luis Cortell was a highly decorated men's soccer player and the Oilers first team sport athlete to achieve National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II All-American accolades. He also led the Oilers to the NCAA Division II Final Four during his senior season and All-American campaign in 2003.

Cortell holds the school record for goals scored in a season as he recorded 16 in 2001 and again in 2003. He earned second team all-Great Lakes Region honors from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and Daktronics in 2001 and was voted first team all-region in 2003 from both organizations. Cortell also earned first team all-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) accolades in 2001 and 2003, and was voted second team all-conference in 2002.

Cortell ranks second all-time at Findlay with 103 points and scored 44 goals in 64 career games.

After his playing career was over, Cortell served as an assistant coach with the Oilers soccer program from 2004-07 before taking an assistant coaching job with Tiffin University from 2007-2010. He then served as head coach for West Virginia University Institute of Technology from 2010-15 and head coach at Shaw University from 2016-18. He achieved a 69-20-6 overall record as a head coach and won the 2013 and 2014 United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) national championships.

Cortell is currently serving as the college placement director and club coach for FC Barcelona and BK2 in Charlotte, N.C.

Eric Atsma

Eric Atsma helped build the Oilers men's golf program into what it is today and won five individual tournament titles during his career, the second-highest total in school history.

Atsma was a standout for the Oilers the moment he arrived at Findlay, earning Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Freshman of the Year accolades in 2005. He is one of only two golfers in program history to be named first team all-conference four times and also secured all-Great Lakes Region honors in 2007 and 2008.

During his senior season in 2007-08, Atsma led the Oilers to their first GLIAC championship as they edged Ferris State University and Ashland University by one stroke with a score of 879 at the Findlay Country Club. Atsma finished as the runner-up, one stroke off the lead, with a 54-hole score of 218 (74, 73, 71) at the championship.

Atsma currently ranks fourth all-time at Findlay with a career scoring average of 74.60 and his 5-under par round of 67 at the Ferris State Invitational in 2005 is the second-lowest score for an individual in program history. He also recorded three, top-five finishes at the GLIAC Championship during his tenure with the program.

Atsma works as a small business specialist for Erb and Young in Florida.

Andrew Uhl

Andrew Uhl is one of the most decorated wrestlers ever at the University of Findlay. He ranks fourth all-time at Findlay with 113 wins and eighth all-time with 28 career pins.

Uhl made an impact the moment he stepped on campus as he finished sixth in the 125-pound weight class at the 2004 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA)  Division II National Championship to earn All-American accolades. He then went 31-11 as a sophomore en route to securing the 133-pound NCAA Division II National Championship.

In his junior season, Uhl again made his way to the national championship bout. This time around, in front of a home crowd in Findlay's Ralph & Gladys Koehler Fitness & Recreation Complex, Uhl was defeated 9-7 to finish as the national runner-up and ended the year with a 30-7 record. He then followed with a 28-8 record during his senior season, finishing sixth at the NCAA Division II National Championship.

Uhl, who was a four-time NCAA Division II All-American and a four-time Academic All-American, was inducted into the Jim Koch NCAA Division II Wrestling Hall of Fame on Mar. 7, 2019. He is currently serving as the Director of Client Resources at TriCore Logic, LLC in Indiana.

Chelsea Combs

Chelsea Combs was a standout women's soccer player for the Oilers who appeared in 94 career games, which is a school record. She also led the Oilers to four appearances in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) National Tournament during her tenure with the program.

Combs, who was a first team all-Great Lakes Region selection for Findlay in 1994, 1995, 1996, and 1997, also earned honorable mention All-American accolades from the NAIA in each of those seasons. She was also picked as a second team All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) in 1997 to go along with first team all-region honors from the organization as well. She was also a second team all-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) selection during her final year with the team in 1997 too.

Combs received her master's degree from Bowling Green State University and has been employed by Procter & Gamble since 2007.
