Oilers Stymied by G-MAC Leader Northwood

Oilers Stymied by G-MAC Leader Northwood

Midland, Mich. The University of Findlay baseball team fell victim to a four-game sweep on Monday, April 3 as they dropped the final two games of their series against the red-hot Northwood University Timberwolves. A 4-2 final in the opener was followed by a score of 10-3 in the nightcap as the Oilers fell to 12-14 overall with a 5-7 record in Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) play. Northwood, on the other hand, has won 13 straight and improves to 20-8 on the year with a 12-0 mark in conference action.

The Oilers took an early lead in the first game of the day when senior Cam Farrar reached on an error and advanced on a wild pitch. Freshman Casey Maruniak followed with a walk and the next batter, senior Nate Brooks, ripped a double to right field, sending two runs across the plate.

Northwood came back with a solo run in the second and added three more in the third to take a 4-2 lead. That would be all the home team needed as the Oilers' offense produced just six base runners over the course of the seven-inning game.

Freshman Blaine Wynk was tough-luck loser on the mound, falling to 2-2 overall. He threw all six innings and allowed four runs, just two earned, on five hits. He walked two and struck out four.

Maruniak was the only player with multiple hits in game one, going 2-for-2 with two singles, a walk, and a run scored.

The final game of the series favored Northwood as the G-MAC newcomer scored three runs in the first two innings to take an early lead. A solo home run by Aiden Lao in the third inning made the score 3-1 and in the fourth, Lao hit a sacrifice fly to bring the score to 3-2.

Northwood then took control, scoring five runs in the fifth on the strength of three extra base hits.

A solo blast in the ninth by senior Cole Kwiatkowski was not enough to spark a rally as the Oilers would fall 10-3.

Senior Bailey McCord started on the hill and took the loss, falling to 2-3 on the year. He threw 4.2 innings and gave up six runs on seven hits. He walked three, struck out six, and gave up three long balls in the 25 batters he faced.

Findlay will return to action on April 7-8 for a four-game set on the road against the Tiffin University Dragons.
