Oilers Finish in Runner-Up at Doc Spragg Fall Invite

RESULTS

Findlay, Ohio – The University of Findlay men's golf team squandered their 36-hole lead to finish the annual Doc Spragg Fall Invitational as the runner-up. The event concluded on Tuesday, September 22 at Findlay Country Club. Findlay, which held a five-shot lead heading into the final round, posted a 296 (+8) to finish in second while the University of Indianapolis saved their best for last, shooting a 281 (-7) to take the crown.

Freshman Justin Atkinson, playing in his first college tournament, fell just short of the individual title after a roller coaster round of 73 (+1) on Tuesday. Atkinson, who was in a three-way tie for the lead entering the day, finished the event in third place at three-under.

On the 15th hole, the Findlay freshman, who was matched up with the eventual tournament champion, UIndy's Oliver Mast, reached the par five in two and sank his eagle putt, his third eagle of the tournament, to take a one-shot lead over Mast with three holes to play. However, Mast would birdie his next two holes while Atkinson made a bogey and a double bogey. Atkinson did birdie the 18th, however, to take sole possession of third place.

Senior Sam Griffith put together his best round of the week, firing a 71 (-1) to end the event at one-over. That score place him in a tie for ninth overall alongside freshman Donnie Professori who also finished at one-over. Professori, after rounds of 69 and 72 yesterday, shot a 76 (+4) on Tuesday.

Senior all-American Luke Kelly wrapped up a tough tournament, posting his second 76 (+4) of the event to finish in 22nd overall with a 223 (+7). Right behind Kelly was junior Tanner Grzegorczyk who shot a final-round 78 (+6) to finish in a tie for 32nd at 225 (+9).

Findlay's top score came from the B team which combined to shoot a three-under 285 on the final day. That team was led by junior Caleb Westfall who took second place overall after a second-round score of 70 (-2), finishing the event at four-under par.

Senior Brock Kehres ripped off six birdies on Tuesday to also card a two-under 70. Kehres finished the event in a tie for 23rd at eight-over while junior Hunter Foltz, who shot an even-par 72, finish in 17th at +4.

Senior Parker Haynes also tied for 23rd at eight-over for the event after putting together his best round of the week, a 73 (+1). Sophomore Jack Soper rounded out the scoring for the B team with a 77 (+5) to finish in a tie for 53rd with a 233 (+17).

The Oilers C squad took 12th in the event with a round of 300 (+12) on Tuesday, finishing at +49 for the tournament. Sophomore Holden Scribner shot a final-round 73 (+1) to lead that team with a score of +9 for the event, good enough to tie for 32nd. Freshman Ty Schobelock also shot a 73 and tied for 40th at 13-over while sophomore Connor Ohlrich tied for 44th at +14 after a round of 80 on Tuesday.

Freshman Luke Gazarek shot a 74 (+2) to finish at +16 for the week while freshman Austin Boley posted an 84 (+12) on Tuesday to finish at +34 for the tournament while freshman Zach Crane, competing as an individual, shot 87 (+15).
