Oilers Start Spring Break Trip Hot With 2 Wins on Day One

Winter Haven, FL- The University of Findlay Softball had two games down in Winter Haven FL on Feb 26 to kick off their Spring Break trip. The Oilers will play a total of 11 games on their trip. The first game of the day was against Assumption University and the second against Georgian Court. Findlay defeated Assumption 14-4 in 5 innings and defeated Georgian Court 6-3. This brings the Oilers to a 4-2 record on the season. 

Game 1- (W 14-4) 

The Oilers started the scoring off with a big first inning. Senior Megan Demler drove in junior Bailey Bates, sophomore Avery Shepherd and senior Lexie Hilling on a single.  

In the second inning the Oilers increased their lead when Hilling scored senior Devyn Zuro and freshmen Lainey Bingham bringing the score to 5-0 in favor of Findlay. 

In the top of the third Assumption closed the gap with a two-run homerun to bring the score to 5-2. 

In the bottom of the innings the Oilers added some more runs when Zuro scored Shepherd on a fielder's choice. Later in the inning Bingham knocked Junior Olivia Carlton in when she reached on an error. Both Zuro and Bingham would score later in the inning off a two RBI single from Bates that pushed the Oilers further ahead 9-3. 

In the top of the fourth Assumption scored on a bases loaded walk and later scored on an infield single.  

In the bottom half of the fifth inning the Oilers a single from junior Makayla Cowan scored Bates. A few batters later Cowan, sophomore Emma Bode and senior Caroline Turner all scored on a grand-slam homerun from Demler that gave the Oilers a 14-4 lead and win due to 10 run mercy rule. 

Megan Demler threw all 5 innings, allowing four earned runs and recording nine strikeouts. 

Game Two- (W 6-3) 

The Oiler started game two against the Georgian Court Lions early scoring in the first when Bates scored on a wild pitch. 

In the bottom of the first the Lions scored on a two-run homerun to left center to bring the score to 2-1 after one inning of play. 

The Lions followed that up with an RBI single in the second inning to give them a 3-1 lead. 

In the 7th inning Findlay showed life and strung together a bunch of runs. Demler scored on a walk by Bates, Hilling and freshmen Rachel Mease scored on a double by Shepherd, Bates scored on a single from senior Madalyn Turner, and then Shepherd scored on a walk from Cowan. The Oilers now had a 6-3 lead that would carry them to a win.  

On the mound for the Oilers freshmen Emma Jones threw 5 innings allowing 3 earned runs and striking out one batter. Closing the door for the Oilers was senior Kelsey Carter who shut the door allowing no runs in 2 innings of work.
