Findlay, Ohio - On Monday morning, May 9, the University of Findlay softball team sat together and anxiously watched as the 2002 NCAA Division II Softball Championship field was announced. After coming up short in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) Tournament last weekend, the Oilers, which had been seeded seventh in the region each of the previous polls, were on the bubble. When the midwest region was called, the team errupted in celebration as they heard their name called, earning the seventh seed in the regional, the program's first-ever berth in the NCAA tournament.

It has been a historic season for the Oilers as the team ripped through the middle part of the season, spouting off 18 consecutive wins and ultimately posting a record of 36-14 which establishes a new program record for wins. The magical season will continue in Indianapolis where the University of Indianapolis will play host to their portion of the split-regional.

Findlay will be matched up against Indianapolis, seeded second, in the opener on Thursday, May 12 at 11:00 am. Opposite the Oilers and Greyhounds is Grand Valley St. (3) and fellow G-MAC member and conference tournament champion Ohio Dominican (6) who will play at 1:30. The four-team double-elimination tournament will conclude on Saturday, May 14 with the winner advancing to play a best-of-three series against the winner of the midwest region's other bracket that includes Southern Indiana (1) vs Saginaw Valley St. (8) and Lindenwood (4) vs Drury (5).

The NCAA DII finals will be held May 26-31 at the Assembly Athletic Complex in Denver and will be hosted by Metropolitan State University of Denver.
