Findlay Drops Twin Bill at Ashland

Ashland, Ohio. - The University of Findlay softball team traveled to Ashland University on Saturday, April 22 for a doubleheader against the Eagles. The Oilers dropped the opener by a score of 5-1 and in the nightcap, fell short by a score of 6-5. With the two losses, Findlay is now 26-13 on the year with a 12-6 record in Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) play. 

Five runs in the bottom of the first inning put Ashland in control of the opener. A single run in the top of the second made it 5-1, but no one crossed home for the remainder of the game. 

Findlay finished with just four hits in the contest while Ashland had ten, five of which came in the first inning. 

Kayla Dykin suffered the loss to fal to 8-5 on the year. She threw just two-thirds of an inning and allowed five runs on five hits. She walked three and struck out two. 

Molly Pfiffner came in relief and pitched well over the remainder of the game, throwing 5.1 innings and scattering five hits. She did not allow a run, walked two, and struck out two. 

Early success came for the Eagles again in Game 2, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first to take the lead. 

In the top of the third, the Oilers had their best offensive inning of the twin bill. Freshman Annika Bredel led off with a single and scored on a double by freshman Alexys Antal. An infield single by senior Caroline Turner was followed by a single off the bat of junior Avery Shepherd, scoring another run. Two more singles in the inning led to another run, tying the game at 3-3 following the six-hit inning. 

Bredel then launched a home run to left center in the top of the sixth, giving the Oilers a 4-3 advantage, but a two-run triple in the bottom of the inning put the home team back in front. 

The Oilers would tie the game in the top of the seventh, but in the bottom, a sacrifice fly gave the Eagles a walkoff win. 

Emma Jones suffered the loss in the circle, falling to 13-3 on the year. She went 6.1 innings and gave up six runs on ten hits. 

Shepherd finished the day with four hits including a double. Bredel had three hits on the day, including a double and a home run. She also scored a pair of runs and had an RBI. Caroline Turner also had three hits, all singles. 

Findlay is back in action on Sunday, April 23 with a home doubleheader against Walsh University. Those games will begin at 1:00 pm.
