Men's Swimming and Diving Finishes 9th at DII National Championship

Final National Championship Results

Greensboro, NC – The University of Findlay men's swimming and diving team participated on the final day of the 2022 NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving National Championship held at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, NC on Saturday, March 12. The Oilers scored 161 points on the week, securing ninth at the event, the highest finish in program history.

Kicking off the day was freshman Camilo Marrugo, taking on a loaded field in the 100 yard freestyle. In the morning, Marrugo clocked a time of 43.74 seconds, the 12th-fastest time in the prelims, giving him a spot in the consolation finals. That time also set a new program record in the event. In the finals, Marrugo completed the race in a time of 44.12 which was seventh in the race and good for 15th overall.

Also swimming on Saturday was sophomore Daniel Garcia who had already put together a meet in which he had earned multiple all-American awards. In Saturday's 200 yard breaststroke prelims, Garcia, the Oilers school record holder in the event, touched the wall in a time of 2:00.50. That time was 21st in the prelims.

Findlay was clearly overlooked and under the radar this season as they came into 2021 ranked outside the top-25 in the preseason poll. All season long, however, the Oilers climbed the polls, cracking the top-25 in November by reaching 21st in the country. The team's big jump came in December when the Oilers shot up the rankings to the no. 8 spot, the third-largest jump from one poll to the next by team in the country this season on the men's side and the highest ranking in program history. Despite not swimming in a competition for more than a month, the Oilers fell just three spots in January's poll, but by March, the team had fallen to no. 15.

Entering the national championship meet, again feeling like underdogs, Findlay promptly showed that it had the firepower necessary to compete with some of the best in the country. With five athletes making the trip to Greensboro on the men's side, the Oilers spent all week in the top-ten, finishing the event as the ninth-best team in Division II.

In total, Findlay athletes earned all-American status in eight events and established seven new program records. The best news for the Oilers is that each of those athletes will return again for the 2022-23 season.
