Marrugo and Garcia Complete Competition at South American Games in Paraguay

Asunción, Paraguay – The University of Findlay men's swimming and diving team has a pair of participants in the 2022 South American Games which is being held in Asunción, Paraguay from October 1-15. Junior Daniel Garcia and sophomore Camilo Marrugo each participated in the event for their home country of Colombia. 

The South American Games is a regional multi-sport event that takes place every four years and features nations from South America. Four years ago, the games played host to more than 4,000 athletes, the most in the history of the event, and in two of the previous four games, Colombia has been the top medaling nation. 

Mirroring the Olympics, the Games have had an equivalent to the Olympic Flame since their inception in 1978: the South American Flame, which is relayed from Tiahuanaco, Bolivia, to the host city. 

Marrugo 

Marrugo has had been outstanding in his debut at the event. In total he participated in six events, the 50m butterfly, 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle, 4x100 free relay, 4x100 free mixed relay, and 4x100 medley relay. He has earned three medals for his country, two as a member of relays and one as an individual.  

In the 4x100 medley relay, Marrugo helped his team to a time of 3:41.05, just a second and a half behind Brazil, to pick up a silver medal. Click HERE for all information on the race including splits and an interactive replay. 

A bronze medal was earned in the 4x100 freestyle relay as Marrugo helped Colombia to a third place finish behind Brazil and Venezuela. Click HERE for all information on the race including splits and an interactive replay. 

Marrugo earned his lone individual medal in the 50m butterfly, an all-out sprint covering one length of the pool. The Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) Freshman of the Year, swimming in lane six, hovered around the middle of the pack midway through the race, but a late surge placed him in a tie for third, earning a bronze medal with a time of 24.29. His next race was the 100m freestyle where he earned a trip to the finals and finished eighth swimming out of lane one. Click HERE for all information on the race including splits and an interactive replay.

The final race of the games for Marrugo was the 4x100m mixed relay. He helped Columbia to a time of 3:37.53 which was not quite enough for a podium finish, taking fourth in the event. Click HERE for all information on the race including splits and an interactive replay.

Garcia

Findlay's junior standout Daniel Garcia qualified in three events in the games including the 200m breaststroke, 100m breaststroke, and 50m breaststroke.

His first event was the 100m breaststroke where he qualified for the finals with a time of 1:03.30 in the prelims. In the finals later that night, Garcia took sixth, finishing in a time of 1:02.83. Click HERE for all information on the race including splits and an interactive replay.

Garcia also took third in the prelim of the 200m breaststroke to earn a trip to the evening's finals where he finished sixth with a 2:19.07. Click HERE for all information on the race including splits and an interactive replay.

His final event was the 50m breaststroke, an all out sprint down one length of the pool. Garcia finished second in his prelim to earn the final spot in the evening's finals.
