Records Shattered on Day 2 of Calvin Winter Invite

Grand Rapids, Mich. – The University of Findlay men's and women's swimming and diving team competed on the second of three days at the always competitive Calvin Winter Invite. Day 2 provided plenty of action as multiple school and pool records fell. Through two days, the Oilers men, ranked eighth in the country, sit in second place behind fifth-ranked Grand Valley State by just over 100 points while the Oilers women are in third, 260 points out of third.

The Highlights

Men

Junior Daniel Garcia put together an incredible day in the pool, highlighted by his performance in the 100-yard breaststroke. In the event, Garcia took first place with a time of 51.93, setting new pool, school, and conference records. That time is also the best in Division II this season and eighth-best in the country including Division I. Garcia's time is the third-best in Division II history.

His day was not done. In the morning prelims, Garcia swam in the 400 IM, an exhibition swim. In that event he finished in a time of 3:51.85 which set a new program record.

Senior Tim Stollings, Garcia, sophomore Camilo Marrugo, and junior Dags Bregis teamed up for a historic performance in the 200-yard medley relay, as well. The squad took first place with a time of 1:25.38, a new school and pool record, an automatic qualifier to the NCAA championship, and the top time in Division II this season.

In the 200 yard freestyle, sophomore Angel Margaritiov took third, but with his time of 1:37.48, he set a new school record, breaking the old record by more than a second. He also teamed up with Garcia, freshman Bruce Keener II, and Bregis to win the 800 free relay with a 6:39.69. That time set a new school record.

Women

Freshman Emily Mears-Bentley adds to her already impressive freshman campaign for the Oilers with another solid performance Friday. In the 100 fly, she took first place with a time of 54.64 which set a new pool and school record. She also led off the 800-yard freestyle relay and was able to swim her 200 yards in a time of 1:50.28, setting a new school record.
