Findlay Sweeps Notre Dame in Final Regular-Season Event

South Euclid, Ohio. – The University of Findlay men's and women's swimming & diving teams, ranked seventh and 19th in the country, respectively, both came away with wins on the road against the Notre Dame College Falcons on Friday, Jan. 27. Findlay's men dominated to the tune of a 140-63 victory while the women also had their way, earning a 136.5-64.5 win in the Keller Center.

Women's Meet Notes

  • Junior Julia Marcuzzi, freshman Katie Susi, sophomore Sasha Melnyk, sophomore Sarah Starkey won the first event of the night, the 200 medley relay, with a time of 1:56.59.
  • In the 1000 freestyle, senior Taylor Christensen was runner-up, clocking a time of 11:10.03.
  • Senior Megan Irwin was seven seconds better than her seed time, winning a tight race in the 200 free with a time of 2:03.78. She edged freshman Troie Grubbs who was runner-up with a 2:03.86.
  • A time of 25.61 by sophomore Macy May was good enough to win the 50 yard free, narrowly beating teammate Sasha Melnyk who was a tenth of a second later at 25.71.
  • The winner of the 200 IM was freshman standout Emily Mears-Bentley who took first with a 2:11.53.
  • In the 100 butterfly, sophomore Sydney Jones took the win with a 1:01.20, two seconds ahead of freshman Grace Grabowski who clocked a 1:03.98.
  • Findlay freshman Macee Reckard was the winner in the 100 backstroke with a 1:01.52, edging sophomore Mille Berg who was runner-up with a 1:01.79.
    • Berg later won the 100 breaststroke with a 1:11.84.
  • In the 500 free, sophomore Abbie Kmet clocked a 5:23.24 in the 500 free to win, beating Notre Dame's runner-up by a second.

Men's Meet Notes

  • Freshman Luke Massie, junior Daniel Garcia, sophomore Jaden Humphrey, and freshman Dylan Day took first in the 200 medley relay with a 1:39.53.
  • Reigning Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) Athlete of the Week, freshman Matteo Filippi, won the 1000 freestyle, touching the wall in a time of 10:01.86.
  • Bruce Keener II was a winner in the 200 free, finishing in a time of 1:46.91, two seconds ahead of the runner-up from Notre Dame.
  • In the men's 50 free, sophomore Angel Margaritov recorded a time of 22.13, good enough to win. He finished just ahead of freshman Zein Kawas (22.25) and junior Luca Chiandussi (22.29).
    • Margaritov was a winner in the 100 breaststroke, finishing in a time of 1:00.69.
  • Sophomore Camilo Marrugo was a winner in the 200 IM as he snuck in under the two-minute mark, finishing with a 1:59.13.
  • In the 100 butterfly, sophomore Jaden Humphrey touched the wall in 52.80 to take first.
  • Junior Daniel Garcia was the winner in the 100 backstroke by almost three full seconds, winning with a 53.32.
  • Sophomore Rafael Lozano took first in the 500 free, swimming the event in a time of 4:49.60.
  • The 200 freestyle relay ended with a win for the Oilers as Marrugo, Chiandussi, Keener II, and Day teamed up to a 1:28.59 finish.

Next Up

  • This was the final event of the regular season for Findlay who now turns its' sights to the G-MAC Championship. That event will take place over four days from Feb. 7-10 in Canton, Ohio.
