Findlay Dominates G-MAC End of Year Awards
Indianapolis, Ind. - 41 days after the completion of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) Championship Meet, the conference announced their 2023 Swimming and Diving All-Conference selections. Findlay led the way, receiving six major awards along with 27 first-team picks, three second-team picks, and four third-team picks.
Men's and Women's Coach of the Year
Coach Andrew Makepeace picked up Coach of the Year honors on both the men's and women's side. This is his sixth consecutive time he has earned this distinction for the men's side.
Women's Athlete of the Year | Women's Freshman of the Year
Emily Mears-Bentley made an immediate impact for the Oilers in the pool. The Leicester, England native won gold in seven different events at the Great Midwest / Mountain East Conference Championship. She helped guide Findlay to their win at the championship, the first since 2019. Mears-Bentley qualified for the NCAA Division II National Championship in the 100-yard butterfly and the 50, 100, and 200-yard freestyle. She picked up three all-American accolades at the event.
Men's Athlete of the Year
For the fourth consecutive year, the Oilers have captured the Men's Athlete of the Year. Junior Daniel Garcia's dominant performance this season made him an apparent candidate for the honor. Garcia won seven events at the conference meet, leading the Oilers to their sixth consecutive championship title. The Bucaramanga, Colombia native's year peaked in the final individual event of the NCAA Division II National Championship, the men's 200 breaststroke. Garcia took the national title in the event, just the second title in program history.
Men's Freshman of the Year
Winning two conference championships was freshman Randy Keener, and for that effort he has been named G-MAC Freshman of the Year. Findlay's first-year standout was critical to the team's success this season and ultimately earned all-American status in two different events this year.
