Oilers Hold Off Walsh for 56-51 Win

The University of Findlay women's basketball team held on for a 56-51 win over Walsh University on Thursday, Jan. 30 in Croy Gymnasium.  The win gives the Oilers a 9-8 record on the season with a 6-7 record in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play.

The Oilers built a 27-17 lead at the break, but with 3:50 to play in the game, Walsh had closed the gap and trailed Findlay by three at 49-46.  Sophomore forward Margaret Wuebker then converted a jumper to extend the lead to five, but the Cavaliers once again answered with a score of their own to make the score 51-48 with 2:20 remaining.

Leading by three, the Oilers extended their lead to six on a three-point play by junior guard Ciara Geiger.  Walsh then connected on a triple, but senior guard Karli Beasley closed the game out at the free throw line with only ten seconds remaining for the final points of the contest.

Geiger led the Oilers with 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting.  She also added five rebounds, three assists and three steals in the win.

Wuebker registered 12 points and seven boards while freshman guard Karli Bonar had nine points, six steals and five rebounds in the win.

The Oilers shot only 36.7 percent (18-of-49) from the floor, but forced 26 turnovers.  They also had 16 steals and grabbed 38 rebounds in the game.

Walsh shot 30 percent (18-of-60) in the game and received 14 points and ten rebounds from Whitney Dabbelt.

The Oilers will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Canton, Ohio to take on Malone University at 1 p.m.
