Chargers Use Big Third Quarter to Power Past Oilers
Hillsdale, Mich. – The University of Findlay women's basketball team played their fifth consecutive road game on Saturday, Dec. 14 in Hillsdale, Michigan against Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) foe Hillsdale. The Oilers were behind by just five at halftime, but struggled mightily in the third quarter, eventually falling by a score of 91-72. With the loss, Findlay is now 5-5 on the year with a 2-1 mark in G-MAC play while the Chargers now sit at 3-7 and, after an 0-2 start to the year, pick up their first conference win.
The Oilers biggest lead of the game was early in the second quarter when sophomore Sydney Kin converted an and-one to make the score 25-21. Hillsdale used a 13-3 run towards the end of the quarter to take the halftime lead at 41-35.
A big third quarter put the Chargers ahead by an ultimately insurmountable 22 points heading into the final ten minutes of play.
In the game, Findlay shot just 22-of-75 (.293) from the floor, their worst shooting performance of the young season, while the Chargers hit 25-of-68 (.368). From beyond the arc, the story was the same as the Oilers canned just five shots in 24 attempts from deep.
Hillsdale also had a significant edge on the glass, grabbing 59 rebounds to just 43 for the Orange and Black.
Freshman Serena Sammarone was the leading scorer for Findlay, scoring a career-high 11 points in the loss. She made 3-of-8 from the floor including one triple and a perfect 4-of-4 from the charity stripe. Sammarone also had a pair of steals and a team-high three assists.
Also in double-figures was sophomore Paige Bellman who scored ten points on the strength of a 4-of-6 performance from the free throw line. Bellman led the defense with four blocked shots.
Junior Madison Stolly scored nine points in the game while sophomore Sydney Kin, freshman Rachel Cooke, and freshman Elizabeth Flynn all scored eight. Kin was the team's leading rebounder with eight boards.
The Oilers will be back on the court on Tuesday, Dec. 17 with a trip to Urbana University. That game will tip off at 6:00pm.
