Oilers Win at the Buzzer

Box Score

The University of Findlay women's basketball team defeated Hillsdale College at the buzzer by a score of 69-68 on Feb. 29 in Niekamp Arena. The win gives the Oilers a 17-11 record on the year with a 13-5 mark in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC).

The Oilers, who trailed by as many as 22 points in the game, fell behind by a score of 67-56 with just under six minutes to play before making a run. Sophomore Paige Bellman began the surge with a three pointer and then sophomore Sydney Kin recorded two straight buckets to make the score 67-63 with 3:24 to play. Bellman then scored again to cut the lead to two at 67-65 before the Chargers made a free throw to extend the lead to three at 68-65.

After a pair of free throws from sophomore Amber Schweiger, both teams failed on their next several possessions before Findlay had the opportunity to win the game in the closing seconds as Kin grabbed a defensive board and found sophomore Bridget Landin, who then dumped the ball to Bellman for the game-winner with no time on the clock.

The Oilers shot 40.9 percent (27-of-66) from the floor and held the Chargers to a mere 33.8 percent (23-of-68) shooting clip. The Chargers did however have the hot hand from three point range, making 18-of-49 (36.7%) attempts.

Kin led the way with 23 points and 12 rebounds while Bellman had 13 points and seven boards.

Landin reached double figures with 11 points and also recorded nine rebounds and eight assists in the win.

Senior Lauren Ruth nearly reached double figures with eight points to go along with six rebounds.

The Chargers were led by Lauren Daffenberg and Grace Touchette who scored 23 and 21 points, respectively.

The Oilers will be back in action again on Tuesday, Mar. 3 when they host a G-MAC quarterfinal contest against an opponent to be determined.
