Record-Breaking Performance Lifts Oilers Over Storm

Box Score

Painesville, Ohio - The University of Findlay women's basketball team used hot shooting on Friday, Dec. 31 to take down a pesky Lake Erie College Storm squad by a score of 82-71 in Painesville, Ohio. With the victory, the Oilers now have a record of 5-6 overall and a 3-2 mark in Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) play while the Storm fall to 1-11 on the year and remain winless in the G-MAC at 0-6.

It had been 11 days since the Oilers last took the floor, but the Orange and Black were anything but timid from the floor as they poured in 30-of-51 shots from the floor for a 58.8% shooting percentage. Included in that percentage was a record-setting performance from three-point range. Findlay was perfect from deep, connecting on all nine shots taken from beyond the arc. The nine made threes are the most in a game this season and it marks the first time in program history that the Oilers have had a perfect 1.000 shooting percentage in a contest. It is the highest single-game shooting percentage in the country this season and is the first time since February of the 2019-20 season that a team has been perfect from deep (Barton College 11-for-11 vs King University).

Findlay surged ahead at the beginning of the contest, taking an 8-0 lead through three and a half minutes. That lead remained as the Oilers took a 25-17 advantage into the second quarter.

Lake Erie did not go away quietly, outscoring the Oilers by seven and using a 6-0 run over the final three minutes to trail by just one point at halftime.

Relying on their hot shooting, the Oilers shoot 64% in the third quarter to start to pull away as they would go on to earn an 11-point victory in the conference affair.

Despite the hot shooting from outside, senior Sydney Kin was the Oilers leading scorer in the game as she poured in a game-high 23 points on 9-of-11 from the floor including 4-of-4 from the free-throw line and a perfect 1-1 from deep. Kin also tied for the team lead with six rebounds and also added a season-high three blocked shots.

Freshman Janae Hoying scored a career-high 17 points in the victory and was one of the Oilers' biggest threats from deep as she hit a perfect 3-of-3 from deep. She also grabbed a career-high six rebounds in the win. Also making 3-of-3 from deep was senior Lauren Hapgood who came off the bench to score nine points.

Senior Amber Schweiger chipped in 14 points, including a triple, and had six assists. The other three-point make came from junior Rachel Cooke who would finish the game with five points.

The Oilers will be back in action on on Sunday, January 2 when they play host to Ursuline College in Croy. That game will begin at 1:00 pm.
