Findlay Picks Up Monday Afternoon Win Over Scrappy Trevecca Nazarene Squad

Findlay, Ohio – The University of Findlay women's basketball team picked up a hard-fought victory on Monday, Feb. 14 against the visiting Trevecca Nazarene Trojans in Croy, winning 71-66 in an afternoon contest. The Oilers are now 11-12 on the season and pick up another important win in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference, improving their league record to 9-8 on the season. With the loss, Trevecca falls to 4-19 overall and 3-14 in G-MAC play.

Neither team held a double-digit lead at any point throughout the game as the scrappy TNU Trojans had an answer for every run the Oilers put together. Findlay's largest lead came three minutes into the second quarter when a layup by senior Sydney Kin put the home team ahead 23-14. Over the next three minutes, he Trojans went on a 10-0 run to take a one-point lead.

The game was tied going into the half at 28-28. In the second half, the Trojans connected on seven threes, keeping the Oilers within reach, but Findlay hit free throws down the stretch to keep TNU at arm's length and ultimately picking up the five-point victory.

Findlay made 25-of-56 (.446) from the floor and dominated in the paint, scoring 46 points from close range. Trevecca had a different strategy. The Oilers, which lead the G-MAC in field goal percentage defense, allowed the Trojans to make 24-of-59 (.407) from the floor including 11-of-24 (.458) from beyond the three-point line.

Rebounds went in favor of the Oilers who held a 44-to-26 advantage on the glass. Findlay also got a big boost from its bench which combined to score 20 points.

Senior Sydney Kin was dominant on Monday afternoon as she scored 27 points on 11-of-18 from the floor. She also had a team-high three steals and grabbed 12 rebounds, her sixth consecutive double-digit rebounding effort. After scoring a season-low five points against Hillsdale last week, Kin has scored 26 points per game over the last three contests and now has scored 1,472 points, just 28 points shy of becoming just the second player in program history to eclipse the 1,500-point mark.

Playing a key role off the bench was senior Amber Schweiger who tied her season-high with 14 points, eight of which came from the charity stripe. Schweiger added five rebounds and two steals.

Senior Bridget Landin had double-digit rebounds, collecting 11 boards and scoring six points. Junior Serena Sammarone scored seven points while freshman Janae Hoying added six. Sammarone had three rebounds and a team-high four assists.

Trevecca Nazarene guard Keeley Carter led the way for the Trojans, scoring 17 points, grabbing eight rebounds, and dishing out seven assists. She also rounded out her stat sheet with three blocks and a steal. Grace Baird hit four triples to score 12 points while Bayleigh Carmichel and Emma Palmer each scored ten points.

Findlay is back in action on Thursday, Feb. 17 with a game against Lake Erie College. That game will be held in Croy Gymnasium in Findlay and will tip off at 5:30 pm and will also be broadcast on the Great Midwest Digital Network.
