Oilers Fall Short of Upset | Lose to TNU

Findlay, Ohio- The University of Findlay women's basketball team welcomed Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) opponent Trevecca Nazarene to Croy Gymnasium on Jan. 14. After a tough second half by the Oilers, Findlay fell by a score of 71-60. With the loss, Findlay falls to 4-13 on the season and 1-8 in G-MAC play. Meanwhile Trevecca Nazarene improves to 11-6 and 7-3 in the conference.

The Oilers dominated the first half of play, outscoring the Trojans in both the first and second quarters. The first half was capped off by a three-pointer by sophomore Janae Hoying as the clock ran out. The basket gave Findlay a twelve point lead heading into halftime. 

The third quarter has wreaked havoc for the Oilers all season, and that proved true once again today. Trevecca Nazarene opened the half with an 11-0 run to put themselves just one back of the Oilers with just under eight minutes remaining in the quarter. From there, the Trojans proved why they are ranked third in the conference standings.

Trevecca would continue to expand their lead, one which they grew to eleven. The Oilers were never able to overcome the Trojan's momentum in the final half of play as they picked up their thirteenth loss of the season and their eighth consecutive.

Findlay hit 22-of-52 (.423) from the floor including 7-of-18 (.389) from deep while Trevecca made an impressive 29-of-60 (.483) and 8-of-22 (.364) from beyond the arc. 

Most notably, the Oilers were 53.8% from the field in the first half. The momentum then flipped at halftime. The Trojans were then 53.1% from the field in the second half. 

Janae Hoying came off the bench and had a career-best day. She poured in 20 points, recording 7-of-8 from the field and 4-5 from deep. She also went 2-for-2 from the charity stripe. She also added two rebounds and one assist.

Senior Amber Schweiger also had a day to remember. At the 2:54 mark in the first quarter, Schweiger dished the ball to Janae Hoying as she hit a three pointer. That assist marked her 400th career assist. She now ranks third all-time in career assists as she now has 402 assists. She chases former standout Audra Mihalic who recorded 426 assists from 2007-10.  

Sophomore Chloe Callahan scored eight points to go along with four rebounds. Junior Kate Ellis had a team-high six rebounds also to go along with seven points.

The Oilers will now travel to Kates Gymnasium to take on #1 Ashland on Jan. 19. The game is scheduled to start at 5:30pm.
