Findlay Suffers Loss to #1 Ashland

Box Score

Ashland, Ohio-  The University of Findlay women's basketball team suffered a conference loss on Thursday, Jan. 19 as they traveled to take on the top team in Division II, #1 Ashland. The Eagle's dominant start proved too much for the Oilers, as they fell 84-42. Findlay falls to 4-14 on the season and 1-9 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) standings. Meanwhile, Ashland remains perfect at 19-0 and 11-0 in the conference.

The Eagles showed their dominance early as they opened the contest with a 13-0 run. Findlay was able to score just six points giving Ashland a 23-6 lead through the first ten minutes of play. The Eagles continued their steady play as they opened the second quarter with a 8-0 run. The Oilers would add a mere seven points in the next eight minutes as they headed into halftime down 41-13.

Ashland then proved why they are the best team in the nation as they outscored the Oilers 43-29 in the final 20 minutes of action to serve the Oilers their ninth straight loss. The Oilers were never able to overcome the hot hands of the Eagles tonight as they hit .586 from the floor while the Oilers hit just .305 in the same statistic.

One key difference between the teams were turnovers. The Oilers, who have had issues protecting the ball this season, recorded 19 turnovers which led to 28 points for the Eagles.

Junior Kate Ellis led the way with 14 points, 10 of which came in the second half. She was 6-of-15 from the floor while also grabbing four rebounds. Ellis also led the team in steals and assists, recording two in each category.

Sophomore Chloe Callahan and senior Serena Sammarone both added five points each.

The Oilers are back in action this Saturday, Jan. 21 as they host Malone University in Croy Gymnasium. That contest is scheduled to tip off at 1pm.
