Albers Qualifies For Nationals, Finishes 4th at Regional
Sophomore Brooke Albers became the first Oilers female golfer to qualify for the NCAA Division II National Championship after firing a 76 in the final round of the Super Region 1 Tournament, which concluded on Tuesday, May 8 at the Findlay Country Club.
Albers finished the tournament in a tie for fourth place and will be one of three individuals from the tournament who will continue playing at the national championship, which is scheduled to take place on May 16-19 at the Persimmon Ridge Country Club in Louisville, Ky.
The Ft. Loramie, Ohio native shot a 1-over par 73 in the first round of competition and then closed the tournament by shooting a 76 on Monday and Tuesday to end the tournament with a score of 225, the lowest 54-hole score in school history.
During the final round, Albers was 1-over par heading into the ninth hole when she was charged with a 2-stroke penalty for hitting an opponent's ball. She ended up taking a seven on the hole and closed the front nine with a 40.
On the back nine, Albers quickly regained those two strokes by making birdie at holes ten and 12. She then parred four out of her last six holes to secure a spot in the championship event.
As a team, the Oilers finished in eighth place with a three-round score of 956 (319, 328, 309), a new school record. Indianapolis won the event with a 911 (300, 307, 304) and will head to nationals along with Grand Valley State (308, 310, 309 - 927) and California PA (304, 318, 310 - 932).
Individually, Indianapolis' Amy Thompson won the event with a 217 (70, 75, 72).
Drury's Katrina Choate (71, 70, 79 – 220) and Ashland's Erin Misheff (71, 79, 76 – 226) will join Albers as individuals competing at the national championship in Louisville.
Findlay freshman Michele Schambs closed the tournament in a tie for 18th place after finishing the final round with a 78. She ended the tournament with a three-day score of 238 (75, 85, 78) to capture the top-20 finish.
Senior Ashley Gubser tied for 38th place with a 246 (87, 84, 75), junior Lauren Vogt was 41st with a 247 (84, 83, 80) and Trelyn Gerlinger was 49th after finishing the tournament with a 265 (91, 89, 85).
