Findlay in First After 36 Holes at G-MAC Championship
Lexington, Ky. – The University of Findlay women's golf team, ranked 12th in the country, is in familiar position through two rounds of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) Championship in Lexington, Kentucky. After 36 holes, the Oilers are in first place with a 632 (+64), carding rounds of 320 and 312. The Oilers are looking to secure their third consecutive conference title, winning the G-MAC Championship last season and the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) title in 2017. Findlay has an 18-shot lead with 18 holes to play.
An all-conference performer in 2018 and GLIAC Freshman of the Year in 2017, junior Meredith Wipper leads the tournament with a 154 (+10) after shooting rounds of 80 (+8) and 74 (+2) through the first 36 holes. Wipper leads the field in birdies with four and is also the only player with a sub-par score on par 5s, shooting -2 on such holes.
One shot back of the lead is the two-time defending conference tournament medalist and reigning G-MAC Player of the Year, senior Makenzie Torres. Tied for second, Torres has a score of 155 (+11) after rounds of 79 (+7) and 76 (+4) on the first day.
In sixth is senior Samantha Hatter, also an all-conference performer last season. Hatter has a score of 159 (+17) with rounds of 79 and 80 to her credit while sophomore Kristina Kniesly, last year's G-MAC Freshman of the Year, is in T11 with back-to-back rounds of 82 (+10) for a 164 (+20).
Freshman Jill Schmitmeyer made her G-MAC Championship debut with rounds of 85 and 83 and is in a tie for 17th with a two-round score of 168 (+24).
Playing as an individual in the event is junior Samantha Kellstrom, an all-conference performer last year. She is in sixth with two rounds of 79 (+7).
The final round of the tournament will be held tomorrow, April 20.
