Findlay in Second at William Beall Fall Classic

Findlay, Ohio – The University of Findlay women's golf team played host to the annual William Beall Fall Classic at Findlay Country Club on Monday, Oct. 5. Although the first round was delayed because of heavy morning fog, the eight-team field was able to complete both rounds on the first of two days. Through 36 holes the Oilers, which ranked seventh in the country in the latest Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) Poll, sit in second place after posting rounds of 302 (+14) and 312 (+24) for a 614 (+38) on the day.

Currently in first place is the University of Indianapolis who posted rounds of 300 (+12) and 298 (+10) to finish the day at 598 (+22). The Greyhounds were led by two-time NCAA DII National Player of the Year, Pilar Echeverria who currently leads the tournament at one-under.

The Oilers boast three players in the top ten on the leaderboard after the first day on competition. Leading the way is senior all-American, Meredith Wipper. She is currently tied for fifth overall after shooting a pair of 76s (+4), despite recording zero birdies on the day. Wipper is tied with teammate, junior Jill Schmitmeyer who also has a score of 152 (+8) for the tournament. Schmitmeyer put together rounds of 75 (+3) and 79 (+5).

Freshman Gabby Woods is in tenth on the leaderboard in the first home event of her career. She started the day with a 75 (+3) and carded a 79 (+7) in her nightcap to finish at 154 (+10) for the first day. Close behind was senior Kristina Kniesly who shot 76 (+4) and 80 (+8) to finish the day at 156 (+12). That score has her in 13th overall.

Tied for 19th is junior Danbi Kim who posted a pair of 81s (+9) to shoot a 162 (+18).

Findlay's B squad is currently sixth out of eight teams after a 666 (+90) on the first day. That group was led by freshman Sarah Scarpill who posted rounds of 82 (+10) and 80 (+8) to shoot 162 (+18), tied with Kim for 19th.

Fellow freshman Abby Jones is in 25th after her day began with an 85 (+13) and was capped with an 81 (+9) for a 166 (+22). Sophomore Lexis Fickel was just two shots behind at 168 (+24) after a sub-80 round to open the day, a seven-over 79, and an 89 (+17) to end the day.

Rounding out the Oilers was freshman Jordan Pruitt who posted rounds of 86 (+14) and 84 (+12) to shoot 170 (+26).

Findlay will wrap up the William Beall tomorrow, Oct. 6 at Findlay Country Club. Tee times will begin at 9:30 am with live video coverage starting at 9:15 am.
