Oilers in First at G-MAC Championship after Day One | Schmitmeyer and Woods Tied for Individual Lead

Lexington, KY- The University of Findlay women's golf team completed day one of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) Women's Golf Championships on Friday, April 16 at the University Club of Kentucky. The Oilers currently hold the top spot of the tournament with a 36-hole total of 597. In the first round, the Oilers shot a 297, then finished the second 18 holes of the afternoon session with a 300. The Oilers currently hold a 22 stroke lead over the second place team in the field.

Leading the Oilers were junior Jill Schmitmeyer and freshman Gabby Woods who are both tied for first place after 36-hole totals of 147 (+3). Schmitmeyer shot a 75 (+3) in the first round, only to follow up with an even-par 72 in round two. Schmitmeyer currently leads the field in par three scoring at one under par. Woods started her day with a round one, one under par round of 71, and followed up with a 76 (+4) in the afternoon round. Woods is currently in a tie for first in total birdies with seven.

Right behind Schmitmeyer and Woods is senior Kristina Kniesly in a tie for third place after a two round total of 149 (+5). Kniesly combined scores of 74 and 75 on day one. In a tie for sixth place, junior Danbi Kim, who leads the field in par five scoring at four under par and tied with Woods for most birdies made with seven, shot a 36-hole total of 154 (+10). Kim shot two rounds of 77 on the day.

Rounding out the Oilers is senior Meredith Wipper who sits in a tie for 12th with a two round total of 158 (+14). Wipper, the defending champion in 2019 and runner-up in 2018 at the G-MAC championships, shot rounds of 80 and 78 on day one.

The Oilers will look to defend the conference title for the third year in a row that the G-MAC Women's Golf Championship has been played. Last year, the 2020 championship was cancelled due to COVID protocols. The final round is set for tomorrow, April 17 and can be followed on golfstat.com for live stat action.
