Oilers Overcome Rocky Start to Cruise to Early Lead at NCAA East Regional

Kansas City, Mo.- The University of Findlay women's golf team completed the first round of the NCAA Division II East Regional today, May 2. The Oilers shot eight-over par with a score of 292. They sit in first place with a thirteen shot lead over the University of Indianapolis.

Leading the Oilers was senior Jill Schmitmeyer. Schmitmeyer shot an even-par round of 71. She shot a 39 (+3) on her opening nine and then finished with a 32 (-3) to secure her spot atop the individual leaderboard. 

Senior Kristina Kniesly and freshman Mary Kelly Mulcahy both finished at two-over par with rounds of 73. Kniesly led the field in par three scoring, averaging 2.50. She also recorded four birdies on the day, the second most of anyone in the field. M. Mulcahy finished with three straight birdies on 16, 17, and 18 to close out her round in her first ever NCAA event. They are both tied for third. Freshman Erin Mulcahy finished four-over par to shoot a 75. E. Mulcahy's card was consistent as she carded thirteen pars. She is tied for fourteenth. Rounding out the lineup was sophomore Gabby Woods who shot twelve-over par 83 to put her in a tie for 47th.

The Oilers will be back in action tomorrow for round two and then again Wednesday for the final round. The top five teams will then advance to the NCAA Division II National Championship which will be hosted in Gainesville, Ga. on May 10-14.
