Findlay Advances to Finals of UNG Bracket Challenge

Homer, Ga.- The University of Findlay women's golf team headed south this week for the University of North Georgia Bracket Challenge. The event is being held at the 6,107 yard, par 72, Chimney Oaks Golf Club. The tournament is being played in a bracket format, utilizing medal match play. The medal match play format consists of five matchups as players go head-to-head. The winner of a match is determined by total strokes and the team that wins at least three matches, declared the winner. The Oilers won both matches Monday, April 3.

In the quarter finals, Findlay, the number one seeded team, took on the eighth seed, UNC Pembroke. The Oilers won four of their five individual matchups to advance to the semi finals.

Leading off the Oilers was senior Jill Schmitmeyer who took on UNC Pembroke's Elizabeth Ritchie. Schmitmeyer recorded a 74 (+2) falling by one stroke, giving UNC Pembroke a point. From there, Findlay put four straight points on the board. Sophomore Mary Kelly Mulcahy recorded a 77 (+5) to take down her opponent by eight. Junior Gabby Woods was the next to finish, firing a 75 (+3) to win her match by seven strokes. Sophomore Erin Mulcahy grinded out a win, recording a 78 (+6) to take a one stroke victory. Rounding out the Oilers win was senior Danbi Kim. Kim recorded a round of 72 (E) to win her match by eight strokes. 

In the semifinals Findlay faced Columbus State. With two matches won, two lost, and one tied, the tie was broken by the combined score of each player- giving the Oilers the win and a spot in the finals tomorrow.

Jill Schmitmeyer kicked the Oilers off again, this time getting a win after recording a 74 (+2) to win by three. Mary Kelly Mulcahy tied her opponent as they both shot rounds of 72 (E). Gabby Woods fell by one stroke after carding another 75 (+3). Erin Mulcahy fell by just one stroke after recording a 78 (+6). Rounding out the lineup was Danbi Kim. Kim found a way to get the win despite recording an 84 (+12).

The Oilers will be back in action for the final match as they face the host North Georgia. Tee times begin at 9:10am.
