#3 Oilers Win Cav Classic | Schmitmeyer Wins Title
Canton, Ohio- The University of Findlay women's golf team, who held the 18-hole lead overnight, was able to secure their fourth victory of the season, April 18. The two day, 36-hole tournament was hosted by Walsh University at the 5,965 yard, par 72, Glenmoor Country Club. The Oilers, ranked third in the country, recorded rounds of 308 (+20) and 304 (+16) to take the team title by 22 strokes over Tiffin.
Leading the Oilers was senior Jill Schmitmeyer who won the tournament individually. She recorded rounds of 75 (+3) and 74 (+2) to finish with a 36-hole score of 149 (+5). This marks the third career win for the St. Marys native. Her prior wins include the 2020 Tiffin Fall Invitational and the 2021 Cav Classic. In fact, Schmitmeyer is the fifth Oiler to win the tournament- the individual title has gone to Findlay since 2018.
Right behind her was junior Gabby Woods who finished in solo second. She carded an opening round of 74 (+3) before a 78 (+6) today for a two-day total of 152 (+9). Also finishing in the top-five was sophomore Mary Kelly Mulcahy who moved nine spots up the leaderboard today, to finish tied for third. After a disappointing 80 (+8) to open the tournament, she recorded a round of 74 (+2) to give her a 36-hole total of 154 (+10).
Rounding out the lineup for the Oilers was freshman Hayley Dye and senior Danbi Kim. Both finished the tournament with a 36-hole score of 161 (+17). Dye recorded rounds of 79 (+7) and 82 (+10) while Kim shot rounds of 83 (+11) and 78 (+6).
Competing as individuals in the event are sophomore Erin Mulcahy and junior Sarah Scarpill. E. Mulcahy finished tied for third after back-to-back rounds of 77 (+5) to give her a two-day total of 154 (+10). Meanwhile, Scarpill tied for eighth after recording a 78 (+6) followed by a 79 (+7). She finished with a 36-hole score of 157 (+13).
The win today marks the Oilers fourth season win. Their other three wins this season include the Gildas Club Laker Fall Invite, the SVSU Spring Invite, and the North Georgia Bracket Challenge. This is the fourth time Findlay has won the Cav Classic with their first win coming in 2018.
This tournament concludes Findlay's regular season. They will turn their attention to the Great Midwest Conference Championship which will take place Apr. 27-29 at the University Club of Kentucky- Big Blue Course.
