Roughnecks Wrap Day 1 of Midwest Classic
The University of Findlay wrestling team completed the first day of the 36th annual Midwest Classic on Dec. 13 in Indianapolis, Ind.
A pair of sophomores led the Roughnecks on the first day as Nick Goebel and Joey White reached the semifinals in their respective weight classes.
Goebel finished day one with a 2-0 record. He reached the semifinals of the 149-pound weight class by scoring a 13-5 major decision win over Lindenwood's Cullen Halpin. He is set to wrestle Shorter's Nathan Galloway in the semifinals for the right to reach the championship round tomorrow.
White finished with a 3-0 record in the 157-pound weight class on Saturday, reaching the semifinals with a pin (5:00) against Lindenwood's Derrick Weller. He will take on 8th-ranked Greg Hegerty of Maryville tomorrow in the semifinals.
Freshman Josh Wimer is still alive in the consolation bracket of the 133-pound weight class after wrapping day one with a 3-1 mark.
Sophomore Schulyer Phillips (2-2), freshman Ryan Skonieczny (2-2), sophomore Nic Skonieczny (0-2) and sophomore Gerald Beck (1-2) also competed for Findlay on the first day of competition, but they were all eliminated.
The event will end tomorrow.
