Wimer Brothers Headed to National Championship

Junior James Wimer and his brother, senior Josh Wimer, will be headed to the 2019 NCAA Division II National Championship as both qualified for the event on Feb. 23 at the Super Region III Tournament in West Liberty, W. Va.

James Wimer went 3-0 at the meet to capture the 157-pound weight class championship. He began the meet by pinning Tiffin's Beau Minnick in 4:36 before earning a 6-5 win over Lake Erie's Nick Boggs, who is ranked seventh in the nation. He then went out and claimed the title with a 7-2 win over Indianapolis' Heath Lange, who is ranked 12th in the nation.

Josh Wimer earned a runner-up finish in the 149-pound weight class and finished the event with a 2-1 record. Wimer entered the championship match of his weight class with a pair of wins over Wheeling Jesuit's Tyler Alberts (4-2) and Indianapolis' Kyle Barkovich (3-2). The ninth-ranked wrestler then was defeated by fourth-ranked Trey Grine of Tiffin in the final 8-1.

In addition, senior Ryan Skonieczny and senior Armani Robinson finished fourth at 141 and 184, respectively. Skonieczny went 3-2 while Robinson finished 2-2.

The 2019 NCAA Division II National Championship will take place on March 8-9 in Cleveland, Ohio.
