Findlay Rallies but Takes 19-18 Loss at UIndy via Tiebreak
Indianapolis, Ind. – The University of Findlay wrestling team took on the University of Indianapolis Greyhounds on the road on Wednesday, Jan. 15. It took a tiebreaker to determine the winner of the dual, but and it was the home Greyhounds who came out with the victory, 19-18.
Findlay trailed 9-0 through two matches after junior Zachary Collins was defeated 3-1 at 127 pounds and the Oilers took a forfeit at 133 pounds.
The Roughnecks then took back-to-back matches at 141 and 149 pounds.
Sophomore Branson Proudlock, competing at 141 pounds, took an early lead, getting a takedown in the first period to jump on top 2-0. A second period reversal put Proudlock ahead 4-0 and another takedown in the third gave him an insurmountable 6-0 advantage, ultimately winning the matchup by a 7-1 score.
At 149, senior Devin Rogers, ranked sixth in the country at his weight, trailed 2-1 through the first period and eventually trailed 6-4 heading into the final period. Needing to take the offensive to earn the win, Rogers tied the match at 6-6, but with his opponent winning riding time, needed a takedown to win in regulation. Rogers got the takedown and ultimately won 8-7.
The Roughnecks were then down just 9-6, but after wins at 157 and 165, UIndy regained a comfortable 15-6 lead.
Junior Nathan Vandermeer, ranked eighth in the country, also won a tightly contested bout at 174 pounds. Vandermeer trailed 4-2 heading into the third period after a reversal by Gleason Mappes closed out the second. Vandermeer tied the match at 4-4 with a reversal and won riding time to earn the 5-4 victory.
At 184 pounds, freshman Danny Rosales defeated UIndy's PJ Sterrett with a solid 7-3 decision. Rosales began the bout with a takedown in the first and added another in the second to take a 4-2 lead. Sterrett pulled within one point at 4-3, but another takedown for Rosales plus riding time earned the Findlay freshman a victory.
UIndy's Zach Fry defeated Findlay sophomore Keigan Yuhas at 197 pounds to make the score 18-12 in favor of the Greyhounds.
The Roughnecks needed a pin to tie the bout.
Freshman heavyweight Caleb Carpenter delivered. Just under two minutes into the match, Carpenter got UIndy's Jeremy Splix on his back to earn the six points for Findlay.
It was not enough, however, as the Greyhounds earned the tiebreaker point thanks to UIndy's 125 pound wrestler Via Abduljelil's first period takedown.
Findlay will face their final tune up before the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) Duals as they travel to Kenosha, Wisconsin on Saturday, Jan. 18 for the Ranger Duals. The following week, Findlay will play host to the G-MAC Championship Duals in the Koehler Fitness and Recreation Center.
