G-MAC Wrestler of the Year

Wimer Named G-MAC Wrestler of the Year

Senior James Wimer was named the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) Wrestler of the Year for the 2020-21 campaign.

Wimer went 14-0 on the year and won a NCAA Division II national championship in the 157-pound weight class after winning a regional title earlier in the year. He also won a league title and was voted the G-MAC Wrestler of the Meet.

"James did a really good job of buckling down and we put a little pressure on him to see how he would respond," said Nelson. "We just said that we needed to approach this year as if it was not going to affect us. We had to really refine things and get back to our philosophy of what we have available time wise."

Wimer was an NCAA Championship semifinalist in 2019 and rolled the dice by sitting out the 2019-20 season. That move paid dividends as Wimer was able to start his master's of education programming and will be returning next season to defend his national title.

"James is so good in all phases," he added. "He's strong, he's flexible and he's a smart wrestler. If you got the best of James, you'd better watch out. Some of the things that he does, you can't teach that."
