Roughnecks Open Season at Michigan State Open

East Lansing, Mich. – The University of Findlay wrestling team kicked off the 2022-23 season on Saturday, Nov. 5 with their annual trip to the Michigan State Open in East Lansing, Michigan. Findlay had 19 athletes compete across 11 different brackets, two of which recorded top finishes.

Sophomore Gary Nilson and sophomore Kenny Snyder made solid runs in the 165-pound freshman/sophomore division. Nilson suffered a loss against Konner Roche (Michigan State) in his opening round, but advanced the fifth-place match after a bye, a medical forfeit, and an 8-4 decision over Bobby Gaylord (Ohio University). Snyder also lost in his first bout, and, after a bye, won by tech fall over Roche (Michigan State), a 16-0 victory. Snyder then won 13-8 against Leo Galasso of Central Michigan. A loss placed Snyder in the fifth-place match against his teammate, Gary Nilson. Snyder won by medical forfeit as the duo would take fifth and sixth place.

Junior Alex Epstein did not place in the 141-pound open bracket, but went 2-2 on the day, picking up a win by fall in the opener and later a tech fall victory (16-0) in the consolation second round.

Findlay's next event will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 9 with a trip to Glenville, West Virginia for the Glenville St. duals.
