Volleyball wins in 5 on Senior Day

The women's volleyball team won a thrilling five-set match on Saturday afternoon against Michigan Tech University.

The Oilers won with set scores of 24-26, 25-17, 22-25, 25-18 and 16-14. The win brings Findlay to 13-14 on the season (7-11 GLIAC). The Huskies drop to 5-20 on the year (3-15 GLIAC).

The decisive fifth set needed extra points to determine a winner. Both teams were tied at 14 before Findlay scored a sideout and Jessica VonIns stepped back behind the line and finished the match with an ace serve.

Findlay used a balanced offensive attack and stellar net play to gain an advantage. The Oilers recorded 18 team blocks in the match, including 6 blocks for freshman middle hitter Danielle Taflinger. Right side hitter Morgan Rogers also chipped in with four blocks.

Taflinger also paced the Oilers with 22 kills and a .594 hitting percentage. Reigning GLIAC South Player of the Week Jessica VonIns had a triple double with 17 kills, 21 assists and 13 digs. Junior Erin Thomasson had 16 kills and hit .424 with 4 blocks.

Michigan Tech outside hitter Kristine Sexton led all hitters with 23 kills. Alicia Schnieder added 15 kills and setter Madeline Haben dished out 60 assists for the Huskies.

Prior to the match the Oilers honored seniors Megan Florence, Abby LaVigne and Sarah Schroeder along with student assistant Jenny Slone. The seniors are celebrating their final homestand with the Oiler program.

The Oilers close out their season with a home match on Sunday against Northern Michigan. Game time is 2 p.m.
