Oilers Drop 2 in Oredigger Classic

The University of Findlay women's volleyball team opened up their 2015 season on the road in the Oredigger Volleyball Classic at the Colorado School of Mines on Friday Sep. 4.  They started their season with a pair of losses after suffering a defeat to Minnesota State Mankato 3-1 (23-25, 21-25, 25-20, 23-25) followed with a loss to Minnesota State Moorhead 3-2 (25-27, 25-20, 21-25, 6-15).  The two losses placed Findlay at 0-2 on the season.

In the first match, the Oilers were led offensively by redshirt freshman Amanda Winner who had 18 kills.  She also added two aces and six digs.  Findlay received help offensively from junior Hannah Tong and sophomore Nickyla Garverick with ten kills each.

Garverick was also active on the defensive side with three solo blocks and one block assist.  Senior Becca Shoemaker led Findlay with nine digs in the match.  Freshman Hailee Olson added two solo blocks and a block assist while also pacing the Oilers with 45 assists.

In the second match of the evening, the Oilers had another solid performance from Tong as she ended the match with 20 kills, two serving aces, and five block assists.  Senior Julie Lyons contributed in the action as well with 14 kills and 10 block assists of her own.

Garverick and Winner pitched in recording 12 and 11 kills, respectively.  Olson continued to distribute the ball well as she accumulated 61 assists.  Shoemaker set the tone again defensively with 23 digs.  Senior Andrea Roach added a well-balanced performance too as she recorded nine kills and three block assists for Findlay.

The Oilers continue in the Oredigger Classic Saturday, Sep. 5 as they take on Western Oregon at 12pm followed by a match against Pace at 4pm.
