Tong Reaches 1,000, Oilers Win South Again

The University of Findlay volleyball team defeated Ashland University 3-2 (20-25, 25-18, 25-14, 23-25, 15-10) on Nov. 14 in Croy Gymnasium to give them their sixth career Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) South Division title. The Oilers, who are now 23-7 on the year, won the South Division title with a 15-3 record in conference play.

The Oilers hit .307 in the match and recorded 63 digs. They were led by freshman Amanda Winner, who registered 23 kills. Junior Hannah Tong hammered out 15 kills of her own and became the Oilers ninth member of the 1,000-kill club during the match. Tong now has 1,003 career kills with the orange and black.

Senior Julie Lyons also recorded double digit kills in the victory with 11. She hit .526 in the match as well.

Senior Andrea Roach had eight kills during the senior day match and sophomore Nickyla Garverick produced seven.

Freshman Hailee Olson had a double-double with 58 assists and 10 digs while freshman Kara Scherger accumulated 24 digs to lead the team.

Senior Becca Shoemaker added 12 digs while sophomore Madelyn McCabe had five.

The Oilers will now host a GLIAC Tournament Quarterfinal game on Wednesday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. in Croy Gymnasium against Northern Michigan. The Oilers enter the tournament as the 2nd-seed.
