The Series

Findlay and Shepherd have met only once before. That contest took place in Shepherstown, WV in 2017 and was also an NCAA playoff game. The Oilers won that contest 29-17, taking down the Rams who were ranked no. 2 in the country and had an undefeated regular season. In that game, Findlay dominated the line of scrimmage and controlled the clock as they possessed the ball for more than 41 minutes and ran for 277 yards, 205 of which came on the legs of Daouda Sylla.

The Oilers' win over no. 2 Shepherd that year was the last and only time that Findlay has beaten an NCAA DII team ranked in the top-five of the American Football Coaches' Association (AFCA) national poll and just the third time Findlay has beaten a team in the NCAA DII top-ten.

Findlay Oilers (8-3, 6-1 G-MAC)

A week ago Findlay was preparing for something that they had not yet achieved, win a conference title. Mission accomplished. This week, the Oilers are getting ready to go play a top-ten Shepherd team on the road in the Division II Playoffs, something that has been achieved. There are a handful of players on the current roster that were on the team in 2017 including running back Derek Lynch, running back Brian Benson, wide receiver Marlin Richardson, linebacker Colin Robertson, linebacker Jack Trombetti, defensive lineman Ervin Besingi, offensive lineman Logan Bailey, safety Kijana Caldwell, and defensive lineman Drew McLuckie. Those players know the feeling of being on a team that can go into a hostile environment in a playoff situation and come away on top. That experience will be invaluable come Saturday when the Oilers step on the field as underdogs against the second-ranked team in the region.

It's no secret that in big games, the Oilers like to go to their bread and butter on offense which is handing the ball off to one of their multiple talented backs and running behind a big, experienced offensive line. That was evident last week when junior Brian Benson tallied 38 carries for a career-high 244 yards and three scores. The challenge for opponents is that Findlay has three tailbacks that have at least one 100-yard game this season and a fourth that has rushed for 95 yards and also three touchdowns in seperate games this season. Of those four backs, two, Derek Lynch and Brian Benson have a 200-yard day to their credit. Lynch, who rushed for more than 300 yards against UNC Pembroke earlier this year, is the team's leading rusher with 115 carries, 676 yards, and five touchdowns while Garret Clark has 91 carries for 487 yards and five touchdowns. Benson, a three-time first team all-conference performer, has 88 carries for 467 yards and six scores while Josh Booker has carried the ball 63 times for 318 yards and six scores, as well. If the game plan is similar to the playoff matchup in 2017, look for any one of those four rushers to be involved.

Should Findlay decide to throw the ball more frequently, quarterback Matt Winzeler is no slouch. The senior ranks second all-time at Findlay in passing yards (5,971), and completions (476) and is third at UF in career touchdowns (56). This season, Winzeler has completed 190-of-326 passes for 2,361 yards and 18 touchdowns. His best game of the year was a 28-for-39, 289 yard, three touchdown performance on the road against Ohio Dominican, proving that he is perfectly capable of being the headline if necessary.

When he is throwing well, Winzeler is spreading the ball to a number of different weapons on the outside. Marlin Richardson has been the top target this year as he has 46 receptions for 703 yards and three touchdowns. He has a pair of 100-yard receiving games this season and also has the big play ability to make a spectacular catch in traffic if need be. Sophomore wide out Tanner Schroeder is second on the team with 33 catches for 469 yards and two scores while tight end Mike Rigerman has 32 receptions, 315 yards, and a team-high five scores. Wide receiver Ruben Flowers is another big threat and this season has 360 receiving yards on 29 catches, four of which have been for touchdowns.

On defense, Marqis Stokes is the leading tackler that will be playing on Saturday as he has 79 stops including four tackles for loss. Stokes also has a pair of interceptions this season and has a 99-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown to his credit. Jack Trombetti has 75 tackles from his spot at linebacker and is second on the team with 7.5 tackles-for-loss while Johnny Harris has 54 tacklse and is tied for the team lead with three interceptions. Jeremiah Jackson, who has 44 stops, also has three picks and leads the Oilers with ten pass breakups.

Ervin Besingi, the G-MAC Defensive Player of the Week this week, has continued his big junior season as he now has 13.5 tackles-for-loss and 8.5 sacks to go along with a forced fumble.

Should the game come down to it, the Oilers have one of the best kickers in the conference in Austin Snyder, who in his first fall season at UF has made multiple pressure packed kicks including a game-winner two weeks ago against Ashland. This year, Snyder has made 10-of-11 field goal attempts and has a long of 42 yards. He is also 39-of-42 on extra points, making him one of the most accurate kickers in the G-MAC.

#8 Shepherd (10-1, 6-1 PSAC)

When talking about some of the most successful programs in NCAA Division, the Shepherd University Rams must be included in that conversation. In the last 16 seasons, the Rams have a record of 154-33 (.824) and have qualified for the NCAA Division II Playoffs 11 times, finishing as a national semifinalist in 2010 and 2016, and finishing as national runner-up in 2015.

In 2021, Shepherd won ten games and finished the regular season as the runner-up in the PSAC East behind conference champion and Super Region One top seed Kutztown University, the lone team to defeat the Rams this season. Of those ten wins, eight came by two touchdowns or more.

The recipe to Shepherd's success this season has been it's video game offense that is the best in the country in both total offense at 541.8 yards per game, and scoring at 49.4 points per game. Most of that success has come through the air thanks to the arm of PSAC Offensive Player of the Year, quarterback Tyson Bagent who has thrown for almost 4,000 yards this season, the most in the country, and has completed 46 touchdown passes, also the most in the country. Through 11 games this season, Bagent has thrown for at least 300 yards in nine of them and has thrown at least four touchdown passes in nine games, as well.

Ryan Beach, the PSAC Rookie of the Year and first team all-conference performer, has been the beneficiary of Bagent's big arm as he leads the PSAC with more than six receptions per game. On the year, Beach has 70 receptions for 939 yards and 13 touchdowns. Josh Gontarek is second on the team with 41 receptions, 785 yards, and eight scores while Ronnie Brown, the team's starting tailback and first team all-conference selection, is third on the squad with 465 receiving yards, averaging 25 yards per catch. The Rams have ten players with at least one touchdown reception this season and have seven players with at least three touchdown receptions.

With all that success through the air, it would make sense if the rushing attack was fairly weak. That is not the case, however, as the Rams still manage to run for 180 yards per game. On the ground, Shepherd is led by Ronnie Brown who has 73 carries for 771 yards and seven touchdowns. The NCAA statistical minimum to be ranked in yards per carry is ten rushes per game. But for that requirement, Brown's average of 10.2 yards per carry would be the best in the country by a full yard. Brown, who rushed for a team-high 185 yards against Millersville in week seven, will split time with Chantz Swartz who has 75 carries on the year and has 494 yards and six scores. Ty Hebron is also a threat, totalling 64 rushes for 478 yards and five touchdowns.

On defense, the Rams top tackler is first team all-conference performer Chrys Lane, a 210-pound linebacker who has compiled 71 tackles including 6.0 tackles-for-loss and 3.0 sacks. Safety Deleon Pence, also a first team all-PSAC selection, has 61 tackles from his position in the secondary while Malik Holloway has 41 stops including 4.5 TFL from his spot on the defensive line. Defensive end Kyle Smith has lived in opponent's backfields and has 14.0 TFL this season including eight sacks. One of his best games of the season was the opener against Ohio Dominican in which Smith made six solo tackles, four tackles for loss, and three sacks.

Should the game come down to field goals, kicker Hayden August-Scriven is 6-of-7 this year and is 25-of-29 in his career with a long of 43 yards. Because of the Rams' prolific, most of his scoring has come via the extra-points where August Scriven has made 155 PATs in his career including making 65-of-68 this season.
